he NBA is entering one of its most intriguing seasons in recent memory. With training camps underway and the 2026–27 NBA regular season scheduled to tip off on October 20, fans are getting their first look at dramatically reshaped rosters, returning superstars and a talented new rookie class. The defending champion New York Knicks will be at the center of Opening Night, raising their 2025–26 championship banner at Madison Square Garden before facing Philadelphia.
Rather than game results dominating the headlines, late September has been all about NBA trades, free agency, training camp and the major roster changes that could reshape both conferences. Several of the league’s biggest names will be wearing different uniforms when the games begin.
A New-Look NBA
The 2026 offseason produced significant player movement throughout the league. Among the biggest changes, Giannis Antetokounmpo joined the Miami Heat, Jaylen Brown landed with the Philadelphia 76ers, Paul George joined the Boston Celtics, Ja Morant moved to the Portland Trail Blazers and LaMelo Ball became a Minnesota Timberwolf.

Another major move occurred in September when Kawhi Leonard returned to the Toronto Raptors. Toronto acquired Leonard from the LA Clippers in a deal that sent Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick and a collection of draft assets to Los Angeles.
Stars to Watch in 2026–27
The new season will feature an interesting mixture of established superstars and emerging talent. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander enters the year as the two-time reigning NBA MVP, while Nikola Jokić remains one of the league's premier players. The two MVPs will meet during Opening Week when Oklahoma City hosts Denver on October 22.
Stephen Curry also remains with Golden State after agreeing to a new two-year extension with the Warriors in September. Curry will immediately find himself in a marquee matchup when Golden State visits Los Angeles on October 21 to face Luka Dončić and the Lakers.
Boston will also be closely watched as Jayson Tatum enters the season healthy following his Achilles injury, now taking on an even larger offensive role following Brown's departure for Philadelphia.
2026 NBA Draft Brings a New Generation
The NBA's next generation has officially arrived. The Washington Wizards selected AJ Dybantsa from BYU with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, making him Washington's first No. 1 selection since John Wall in 2010.
The Utah Jazz selected Darryn Peterson from Kansas second overall, while the Memphis Grizzlies took Cameron Boozer from Duke at No. 3. Caleb Wilson went fourth to Chicago, and Keaton Wagler rounded out the top five after being selected by the LA Clippers.
For Washington fans, Dybantsa will be one of the most closely watched rookies in the league as the Wizards begin developing their newest young centerpiece.
Major Players Returning From Injuries
Health will once again play an important role throughout the NBA season. Several recognizable stars are attempting significant comebacks in 2026–27.
Among the players scheduled to return after missing substantial time are Kyrie Irving, Damian Lillard and Tyrese Haliburton. Their returns could have major implications for their respective teams as the season progresses.
Managing workloads and keeping stars healthy will become increasingly important as teams move from training camp through the 82-game regular season and eventually into the postseason.
Opening Week Games to Watch
Opening Week provides NBA fans with several major matchups immediately. The season begins Tuesday, October 20, with Boston visiting Detroit before Philadelphia travels to Madison Square Garden for the Knicks' championship-banner celebration. Oklahoma City then visits San Antonio in a rematch of the 2026 Western Conference Finals.
October 21 brings another pair of highly anticipated games. Giannis Antetokounmpo is scheduled to make his Miami debut when the Heat host LaMelo Ball and Minnesota, followed by Golden State vs. the Lakers, featuring Stephen Curry against Luka Dončić.
Then on October 22, Cleveland visits Philadelphia for LeBron James' home debut with the 76ers, while Denver travels to Oklahoma City for a matchup between Nikola Jokić and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
The NBA Cup Returns
The Emirates NBA Cup will also return for its fourth season. Group Play begins October 30 and will include five consecutive Friday doubleheaders on Prime Video. The competition adds another layer to the early portion of the regular season as teams compete for both regular-season positioning and the NBA Cup.
A Season Filled With New Storylines
The 2026–27 NBA season arrives with an unusual amount of change. Superstar movement has altered the balance of several teams, young players are preparing to establish themselves, established veterans are beginning new chapters, and injured stars are attempting major comebacks.
From Giannis in Miami and LeBron and Jaylen Brown in Philadelphia to LaMelo Ball in Minnesota, Ja Morant in Portland and Kawhi Leonard back in Toronto, basketball fans will have plenty of new combinations to follow when the season tips off.
The defending champion Knicks will attempt to protect their crown, while contenders throughout the Eastern and Western Conferences begin their own pursuit of the 2027 NBA championship.
